INquery: Phoenix Children's
Phoenix Children’s has partnered with the Arizona State University Cloud Innovation Center (CIC) to build a tool that lets administrators query medical documents using natural language processing.
Problem
For a health system of this size, it is a challenge to categorize and query the many regulatory policy documents that staff must be aware of. Medical facilities allocate manual resources to sort through cluttered document systems which results in long lead times for administrative tasks. When trying to ensure that patients receive the best possible treatment, an organized and easily accessible search system for medical documents can be invaluable.
For example, insurance company guidelines on procedure pre-authorization are constantly changing. To prevent patient families from unexpected charges or denial of claims, Phoenix Children’s administrators manually validate insurance websites for pre-authorization requirements for every procedure.
Approach
The “INquery” tool will allow Phoenix Children’s administrators to upload large medical policy documents (such as insurance pre-authorization guidelines) to an Amazon S3 bucket as a central repository. Amazon Sagemaker Foundation AI generative model will be leveraged to generate embeddings while storing and querying the PDF documents. This will allow Phoenix Children’s to efficiently use natural language while searching procedure specific insurance company pre-authorization guidelines, thereby reducing the time and resources required to verify information prior to medical procedures.
Supporting Artifacts
The Amazon Working Backwards process produces three artifacts - a fictional Press Release, a list of Frequently Asked Questions, and a Visual depiction of the user experience. The Phoenix Children's artifacts can be found here:

Next Steps
Phoenix Children’s is working with the ASU CIC to develop a prototype.
About the ASU CIC
The ASU Smart Cities Cloud Innovation Center (CIC) is a strategic relationship with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and is supported by AWS on ASU’s Innovation campus - SkySong. The mission of the CIC is to drive Innovation Challenges that materially benefit the greater Phoenix metro area and beyond. The CIC will do this by solving pressing community and regional challenges, using shareable and repeatable technology solutions from ideation through prototype, as a service for the greater human good.
The CIC also provides real-world problem-solving experiences to students by immersing them in the application of proven innovation methods in combination with the latest technologies to solve important challenges in the public sector.
The challenges being addressed cover a wide variety of topics including homelessness, water conservation, vandalism, pedestrian safety, digital service delivery and many others. The CIC leverages the deep subject matter expertise of government, education and non-profit organizations to clearly understand the customers affected by public sector challenges and develops solutions that meet the customer needs.
