Sun Devil Skill Sorter: Arizona State University

Overview

The Arizona State University Cloud Innovation Center, in partnership with Arizona State University, is in the process of developing an internal solution to help ASU CIC managers better sort through the large amount of applications they get when they post a student job opening.

Problem

The Arizona State University Cloud Innovation Center (CIC) hires student cloud developers once or twice a year.  When they engage in this hiring process, they often receive upwards of 200, or even more, applications.  Each application contains basic information, a resume, and a cover letter.  It can take up to six or seven hours for managers at the CIC to comb through the resumes manually, which can slow down the hiring process in a time when help is needed on teams at the CIC.

Approach

Once managers have specified the skills they are looking for, the Sun Devil Skill Sorter will utilize Amazon Comprehend to classify resumes and cover letters that are sent as bundles by ASU Human Resources. This allows managers engaging in the hiring process to easily sort through applications in an easy-to-read format.  The PDF files will then be converted to text documents and run through the Jurassic-2 Jumbo Instruct Large Language Model.  From this model, candidates can be identified for their strengths and will be moved to the interview phase of the hiring process.

About the ASU CIC

The ASU Smart Cities Cloud Innovation Center (CIC) is a strategic relationship with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and is supported by AWS on ASU’s Innovation campus - SkySong. The mission of the CIC is to drive Innovation Challenges that materially benefit the greater Phoenix metro area and beyond. The CIC leverages the deep subject matter expertise of government, education and non-profit organizations to clearly understand the customers affected by public sector challenges and develops solutions that meet the customer needs.
